ALL THE RIVERS RUN (Australian TV Mini-Series)
by Nancy Cato. Sigrid Thornton series photo cover. B&W movie stills section. Condition: Gently pre-read 1979 Signet New American Library paperback, 6th printing. Pale spine crease with light tanning to page edges. Remainder. Content: "Here is a spellbinding story of a beautiful and vital woman - the man she loved, the children she bore, the dreams she followed, and the destiny she found. The wonderful Australian mini-series concentrates on the life and loves of riverboat captain Delie Gordon and her many "lives." The 1980s mini-series lists two directors: Pino Amenta & George Miller - no idea if that is correct. The stars are the beautiful Sigrid Thornton (as Delie), John Waters, John Alansu, Roy Baldwin, and Kirk Alexander. The book is wonderful; the movie even better - BUT don't buy the commercially available movie - over 100 minutes have been cut out of the original mini-series. Wait for HBO to show it again and tape it from there. [1 copy available]

Content: Probably the most important and talked-about murder case in Texas history. Power, passion, oil money, murder--all the ingredients of a fast-paced, gripping mystery novel drive this true-crime story that on its original publication leapt onto best-seller lists nationwide. To that mix, add glamorous personalities, prominent Texas businessmen, gangland reprobates, and a whole parade of medical experts. CATHOLICS: A Novel AND The Conflict (DVD Movie of the Book) 2 for 1
by Brian Moore. Condition: Gently pre-read 1972 McClelland & Stewart (Toronto) slim hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket). The interior has no problems, but the DJ does have problems: repaired nics top edge with tanning to the edges and rubbings to the gilt lettering. Content: On a remote isle off the Kerry coast, a group of monks has decided to take a stand against its masters in Rome - contrary to modem edicts, the brethren have chosen to retain the old traditions and ceremonies of worship. Their ancient practices do not go unnoticed however, and as they start to attract crowds of curious tourists pilgrims even - someone has to stop them. But when Father James Kinsella arrives with strict orders from the Vatican, he does not find, as he anticipates, a community united in defiance, but one riven by dogma and doubt. In this masterly evocation of an island brotherhood, Brian Moore explores the subtle boundaries that shift between duty and faith, between obedience and dissent. The 1973 made-for-TV movie is called The Conflict and was directed by Jack Gold and starred a very young Martin Sheen, Trevor Howard, Cyril Cusack, and Sir Michael Gambon ("Dumbledore"). It is a thought provoking take on the Catholic Church proclaiming that Mass would be said in a country's native language and no long in Latin. This is a digitally remastered DVD. Questions welcome. EMPIRE FALLS (HBO TV Miniseries) [Pulitzer Prize winner].
by Richard Russo. Cast photos front cover. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 2005 Vintage Trade Paperback, first printing. Light edge wear. Although unread, the book does feel "crisp." Content: This is a tale of blue-collar life, which itself increasingly resembles a kind of high-wire act performed without the benefit of any middle-class safety nets. This time, though, the author has widened his scope, producing a comic and compelling ensemble piece. There is, to be sure, a protagonist: fortysomething Miles Roby, proprietor of the local greasy spoon and the recently divorced father of a teenage daughter. But Russo sets in motion a large cast of secondary characters, drawn from every social stratum of his depressed New England mill town. We meet his ex-wife Janine, his father Max (another of Russo's cantankerous layabouts), and a host of Empire Grill regulars. We're also introduced to Francine Whiting, a manipulative widow who owns half the town--and who takes a perverse pleasure in pointing out Miles's psychological defects. Miles does indeed have a tendency to take it on the chin. And his role as Mr. Nice Guy thrusts him into all sorts of clashes with his not-so-nice contemporaries, even as the reader patiently waits for him to blow his top. It would be impossible to summarize Russo's multiple plot lines here. Suffice it to say that he touches on love and marriage, lust and loss and small-town economics, with more than a soupçon of class resentment stirred into the broth. This is, in a sense, an epic of small and large frustrations: "After all, what was the whole wide world but a place for people to yearn for their heart's impossible desires, for those desires to become entrenched in defiance of logic, plausibility, and even the passage of time, as eternal as polished marble." Yet Russo's comedic timing keeps the novel from collapsing into an orgy of breast-beating, and his dialogue alone--snappy and natural and efficiently poignant--is sufficient cause to put Empire Falls on the map. The 2005 HBO miniseries was directed by Fred Schepisi and starred: Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Ed Harris, Helen Hunt, Robin Wright-Penn, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Aidan Quinn, Dennis Farina, Estelle Parsons, Jeffrey DeMunn, Kate Burton, and Theresa Russell. HOT TODDY:
The True Story of Hollywood's Most Shocking Crime - The Murder of Thelma Todd

by Andy Edmonds. Loni Anderson TV movie cover with B&W photo section of the "real" Thelma Todd. Condition: Very good 1990 Avon Books Paperback second printing. Tiny edgewear with short spider crease front cover at hinge. Pale spine crease. Very nice pre-read book. Content: Reviewer: "When Thelma Todd was found dead in her garaged car on December 16, 1935, the authorities declared it a suicide. But many suspected this was a murder. Some of the suspects were: her business associate; her cafe treasurer; a gangster (Lucky Luciano) involved with gambling, drugs, and prostitution; and her former husband. The author became interested in this case, spent seven years researching old records, interviewing men who had inside knowledge of the underworld, and the personal letters of Thelma Todd. These were used to recreate the true story of this murder." Fascinating book. Fairly good TV movie with Loni Anderson. [1 copy available]

MARK AND LIVY: The Love Story of Mark Twain and the Woman Who (Almost) Tamed Him
by Resa Willis. B&W photo section. Condition: NEW 2000 TV Books Trade Paperback, no printing given. Content: Olivia Langston (1845-1904) married Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) in 1870 and remained his wife for 34 years. In line with the conventions of the times, she saw herself as a wife, mother and "tamer" of iconoclastic Twain. However as Willis, literature professor at Drury College in Missouri, points out in this carefully researched, readable biography, Langston was also his valued critic and editor. In humorous anecdotes Twain portrayed "Livy" as a shrew--but the relationship between the mild-mannered, self-effacing woman and the cantankerous literary genius was apparently one of deep commitment and love. Their affection for one another, claims Willis, saw them through the rise and fall of their financial fortunes, the death of their daughter and Livy's many illnesses. The author's access to letters and journals gives insight into both husband and wife, as well as providing a portrait of American domestic life in the late 1800s. This book was the basis for the Masterpiece Theatre program. There is, at this date, no VHS/DVD of this program. [1 copy available]

MR. AND MRS. BO JO JONES
by Ann Head. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1971 Scholastic paperback, special printing. Light taning to some of the white cover edges and a name top front cover edge. Content: Reviewer: "This is a poignant read about a time gone by. July and Bo Jo are typical teenagers in the 60's when one night together changes their life plans. The story tells how July, Bo Jo and their families deal with an unplanned pregnancy. July tells her story "for whatever it may be worth to some young couple on the brink of the same". July and Bo Jo don't really know each other that well, but they choose to do the "right thing". I first read this book in junior high and that was long ago enough for me, that the word "pregnant" was often whispered in polite company when you were talking about an unmarried woman. Ann Head's book really took me back. As a young teenager reading it the first time, I remember being a little lost because Head wrote so much between the lines. July becomes pregnant in the beginning of the story, but words such as "pregnant", "baby", and "make love" are not memtioned until you are well into the story. I don't think the word sex is ever used. When I began rereading the book, my first thought was "how dated!" But now I realize that Head accurately captured the culture and attitudes of the middle to upper middle class, small southern town, country club society. Like many stories it was contemporary when it was written, now it's a classic which reflects a time gone by. Head's characters are clean and crisp. Even though Head uses the voice of July to tell the story as a warning to other young couples, through the dialogue she manages to convey the feelings of disappointment and turmoil that all of the characters experience, including July's siblings. Even though today our attitude about teenage pregnancy appears much more relaxed, the feelings that Head writes about are still relevant." [Every pre-teen and teen girl should read this book!] The 1971 made-for-TV movie was directed by Robert Day and starred Desi Arnaz, Jr., Christopher Norris, Dan Dailey, Dina Merrill, Tom Bosley, Jessie Royce Landis, Lynn Carlin, and Susan Strasberg. Rod Serling's THE TWILIGHT ZONE: The Odyssey of Flight 33 (Graphic Novel)
adapted from Rod Serling's script by Mark Kneece. Color graphics by Grabe. Condition: NEW 2008 Walker soft cover, first printing. Tiny tiny edge wear. Content: In 1973, Trans-Ocean Flight 33 destined for New York departs from London. The pilot initiates what seems to be a routine flight when a sudden shift in acceleration is noticed by crew members. Breaking barriers of time, the flight travels to the projected destination, but approaches New York in the year 1939. When the pilot attempts to correct this error, the flight is sent back in time to a prehistoric era of dinosaurs. The passenger list includes a parachute performance artist, an older woman who prattles incessantly, and a tightly wound young man recently discharged from the Air Force who is instantly branded by the flight attendants as a troublemaker. The story follows these travelers during this unexpected and startling odyssey, hurtling back and forth through countless millennia as they search for New York in 1973. The opening narration from the original television series and flight-attendant references to Valhalla add to the futuristic feel of impending doom. Text in boxes announces a voice-over of Rod Serling informing readers that they have entered the Twilight Zone. His original TV story has been re-created from an original uncut script for this full-color graphic adaptation. SAINT MAYBE (TV Movie)
by Anne Tyler. John Collier cover art. Condition: UNREAD 1991 Borzoi hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. Light edge wear to bottom DJ edge. Content: Tyler is again giving us ordinary, not eccentric characters who are shaped by disastrous events into quietly heroic behavior. The Bedloes are cheerful and count their blessings, even if they are far from rich and live on a slightly seedy street in Baltimore. But when 17-year-old Ian rashly informs his older brother Dan that the latter's wife was undoubtedly pregnant before their marriage, Dan commits suicide, and Ian is left with profound guilt--especially since Dan's wife dies soon after. Asking God's forgiveness, he receives spiritual guidance at the endearingly shabby Church of the Second Chance. He drops out of college, becomes a carpenter and helps his parents care for the three orphaned children; as the years pass, that burden falls primarily on Ian's shoulders. Wondering when God will signal that his atonement can end, Ian has an epiphany: "You could never call it a penance, to have to care for those three." Ian eventually does construct a life for himself, in one of Tyler's most appealing endings. The narrative also enjoys her whimsical humor (although the group role of the "foreigners" who live in the neighborhood verges on caricature). Since her characters' foibles never overwhelm their homespun simplicity, the reader is emotionally involved and touched as never before. The 1998 made-for-TV movie was directed by Michael Pressman and starred Blythe Danner, Edward Herrmann, Melina Kanakaredes, Mary-Louise Parker, Thomas McCarthy, Jeffrey Nordling, and Glynnis O'Connor. THE WEDDING
by Dorothy West. Norman Lewis cover painting. Condition: UNREAD 1995 Anchor Books Trade Paperback, 8th printing. Content: The tranquility of a late summer weekend in 1953 is shattered by a tragic accident in this spare, affecting novel by one of the last surviving members of the Harlem Renaissance. The Oval, the exclusive black enclave on Martha's Vineyard, prepares for the marriage of Shelby Coles, daughter of one of the community's most admired couples. Shelby's choice of white jazz musician Meade Wyler awakens dormant but unresolved racial issues in her family, which includes her physician father, enduring a loveless but socially proper union; her mother, confronting a dwindling pool of partners for her discreet affairs, and her great-grandmother, who dreams of escaping her ambivalence by returning to her aristocratic Southern roots. The arrival of black artisan Lute McNeil upsets the precarious equilibrium of the Oval when his aggressive pursuit of Shelby leads to disaster. Through the ancestral histories of the Coles family, West subtly reveals the ways in which color can burden and codify behavior. The author makes her points with a delicate hand, maneuvering with confidence and ease through a sometimes incendiary subject. The 1998 Oprah Winfrey TV miniseries was directed by Charles Burnett and starred Halle Berry, Eric Thal, Lynn Whitfield, Carl Lumbly, Shirley Knight, Richard Brooks, Michael Warren, and Patricia Clarkson.
