Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1968 Signet paperback, 15th printing. Edgewear with light hinge crease. Interior clean & tight with moderate tanning to page edges. Content: Clarke wrote the book based on the screenplay by Clarke and Stanley Kubrick as the film was being made. When an enigmatic monolith is found buried on the moon, scientists are amazed to discover that it's at least 3 million years old. Even more amazing, after it's unearthed the artifact releases a powerful signal aimed at Saturn. What sort of alarm has been triggered? To find out, a manned spacecraft, the Discovery, is sent to investigate. Its crew is highly trained--the best--and they are assisted by a self-aware computer, the ultra-capable HAL 9000. But HAL's programming has been patterned after the human mind a little too well. He is capable of guilt, neurosis, even murder, and he controls every single one of Discovery's components. The crew must overthrow this digital psychotic if they hope to make their rendezvous with the entities that are responsible not just for the monolith, but maybe even for human civilization. Great SciFi and great movie. The 1968 movie classic starred Duella, Gary Lockwood, Daniel Richter, and Leonard Rossiter. [1 copy available]

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KING: The Making of Steven Spielberg's Classic Film
by Ray Morton. Two color photo sections. Condition: NEW 2007 Applause Trade Paperback (383 pages), assumed first printing. Tiny edge wear. Content: "Morton has written the definitive book on this innovative movie by Steven Spielberg...Meticulous research of this caliber is not found in other books on Close Encounters. Fans will find Morton's take informative and fascinating." - Library Journal. Steven Spielberg's 1977 masterpiece used all of the power and magic of cinema to tell a story of man's first meeting with extraterrestrial beings. Renouncing the fear and pessimism of the day, writer/director Spielberg boldly envisioned this as a peaceful, spiritual event full of hope and possibility. This awe-inspiring message made a powerful impact on audiences desperate for something to believe in. The film was a massive box-office hit and revolutionized the movie industry; along with Star Wars, it helped to create the modern blockbuster and ushered in a new era of hi-tech effects. Based on in-depth research and the recollections of many of the film's principal creators, Close Encounters is the first book to chronicle the making of this classic film from its inception through its tumultuous production to its many releases in "special" editions. The book features new interviews with star Teri Garr, producer Michael Phillips, photographic effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull, production designer Joe Alves, and several cinematographers, screenwriters, and special-effects legends. THE CREATION OF DINO DE LAURENTIS' KING KONG
by Bruce Bahrenburg. 50+ B&W movie stills. Condition: UNREAD 1976 Pocket paperback, first printing. Small edgewear with moderate tanning to interior page edges. Tons of B&W movie stills illustrate. Content: In light of the new rendition of Peter Jackson's King Kong (2005), this book may fall a little short technically, but it's still worth the read. "Is this the best King Kong movie - heavens no! Probably the worst. The magic of the book is in the behind-the-scenes stories about making a big budget flop with special effects. Reviewer: "How to make a 40 foot flop! This is the making of the 1976 remake of the 1933 classic King Kong. A monumental, money-eating flop, maybe, but an interesting "making of" all the same. From malfunctioning mechanics to illiterate Italians bound on squandering as much of the green as possible to make their vision a reality, this book has it all. Why remake a classic (though in modern terms a little cheesy looking) that has spanned decades and stood the test of time, at least in the eyes of movie buffs? Who knows, but this book is an excellent insight into the behind-the-scenes of the film making process, and should satisfy anyone after a glimpse into the realms of epic Hollywood." The 1976 disaster starred Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, Jessica Lange, John Randolph, and Rene Auberjonois. [2 copies available]

CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON # 1 (Graphic Novel)
by Wang Du Lu and Andy Seto. Beautifully rendered color illustrations. Action and beauty - such a deal! Condition: NEW 2002 Comics ONe (English Translation) trade paperback, no printing given. Neat raised cover art. Content: The film version of Du Lu's novel achieved international fame. Now, the first installment of the epic martial arts tale comes to the comic world. Adapted from the novel, Seto's version features Li Mu Bai and Yu Shu Lien, and establishes a full cast of characters. The story opens on a Beijing rooftop; masked thieves are on the run from the mighty warrior Golden Sword, who has sworn to avenge his father's death. The murderer? Grand Yu, another martial arts master-and Yu Shu Lien's father. Lingering on Golden Sword just long enough to establish that he's a dangerous man on a mission, the action then moves to Shu Lien and her father, as they set out on a cultural excursion. Naturally, Golden Sword's gang appears, intent on revenge, but Shu Lien's mighty fighting moves disperse them. Finally, readers meet Li Mu Bai, a gentle hero who spends time sitting on a rock in the middle of a river, using his mind to direct its flow. Of course, he and Shu Lien are a perfect match, but after an introductory friendly fight, readers learn Shu Lien is betrothed to another. As part one ends, Golden Sword's gang rushes off to perhaps their next battle. Seto's challenge is conveying the speed and motion of the martial arts; while the pages crackle with energy, specifics of fighting technique are simply impossible to discern from still images. The movie was based on the fourth in a series of five novels by Wang Du Lu. There is so much detail and the art is so fluid and the colors are so vivid it just demands a second read to take everything in and the pacing is perfect. The 2000 movie was directed by Ang Lee and starred the great Yun-Fat Chow, Michelle Yeoh, and Ziyi Zhang. Jr. High School - Adult. [1 copy available]

THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS
by John Wyndham. Cover art by Gary Viskupic. Condition: Gently pre-read c. 1951 Doubleday hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), Book Club Edition. Light edge wear to DJ edges. Honestly, I don't believe this book is 1951 vintage, but that is the only date I can find for a Book Club Edition. No tanning. Clean! Content: This classic SF novel traces the fate of the world after a comet shower blinds most of the world's population. The few with sight must struggle to reconstruct society while fighting mobile, flesh-eating plants called triffids. [NOTE: A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. In the original novel, this chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people. In the film version, however, the Triffids are not experimental plants. Instead they are space aliens whose spores have arrived in an earlier meteor shower.] The 1962 movie was directed by Steve Sekely and starred Howard Keel (he doesn't sing), Nicole Maurey, and Mervyn Johns. FINDING GOD IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS
by Kurt Bruner and Jim Ware. Condition: NEW 2001 Tyndale small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: There's more to Middle-earth than meets the eye, argue Kurt Bruner and Jim War. J.R.R. Tolkien, a devout Christian, helped bring C.S. Lewis into the faith and met weekly with Lewis and Charles Williams at an Oxford pub for heated religious and literary discussions that informed The Lord of the Rings. Although Bruner and Ware avoid any simplistic claim that Tolkien's saga is "a covert allegory of the Gospel," the authors assert that the books have evangelistic power because they "can open the heart's back door when the front door is locked." Twenty-one short chapters describe various scenes and themes from Tolkien's work in order to illustrate truths of Christian life. For instance, Frodo and Sam's awareness that their adventures are part of a larger story "reflects the Christian understanding of providence, that we are all part of a story being written by the creator of all that is." Finding God successfully clarifies the ways that Tolkien's Christian worldview influenced the creation of his fantasy world, while respecting the artistic integrity of his achievement. THE HANDMAID'S TALE
by Margaret Atwood. Condition: UNREAD 1987 Ballantine paperback, 38th printing. Light edge wear with rubbings along the bottom half of the back hinge. Interior clean & tight. Content: In a startling departure from her previous novels, respected Canadian poet and novelist Atwood presents here a fable of the near future. In the Republic of Gilead, formerly the United States, far-right Schlafly/Falwell-type ideals have been carried to extremes in the monotheocratic government. The resulting society is a feminist's nightmare: women are strictly controlled, unable to have jobs or money and assigned to various classes: the chaste, childless Wives; the housekeeping Marthas; and the reproductive Handmaids, who turn their offspring over to the "morally fit" Wives. The tale is told by Offred (read: "of Fred"), a Handmaid who recalls the past and tells how the chilling society came to be. I, ROBOT: The Illustrated Screenplay (The Greatest Science Fiction Move Never Made)
by Harlan Ellison. Book by Isaac Asimov. Cover art, B&W art, and interior color section by Mark Zug. Condition: UNREAD 2004 ibooks Trade Paperback, first printing. Tiny edge wear. Content: Reviewer: "This may well be the most infamous unproduced script in Hollywood history. Ellison takes several of Isaac Asimov's classic Robot short stories and weaves them into the life story of Susan Calvin, told in flashbacks to a reporter at the funeral for Stephen Byerley, First President of the Galactic Federation. Ellison's introductory essay is certainly not as vitriolic as his story about what happened to his "Star Trek" script "The City on the Edge of Forever," but it does recount the bizzaro world of movie making. Both the essay and the script are testaments to Ellison's affection for Asimov. A special treat is Ellison's revelation as to the casting he had in mind when he wrote the script: Joanne Woodward as Susan Calvin, George C. Scott as Reverend Soldah, Martin Sheen as Robert Bratenahl, and Keenan Wynn and Ernest Borgnine as Donovan and Powell. You may come to this book as a fan of Ellison or of Asimov or of both. Regardless of your point of origin I think it is important that you have read the original Asimov Robot stories before you read the script. The stories are Asimov's but the adaptation is Ellison's, and you have to know the original tales to appreciate the inspired organization of this script. Of course, now that there is a Will Smith movie version of "I, Robot" out, reading Ellison's script and comparing it to what Hollywood has wrought is a perfect case study of what Tinsle Town is all about. At the start of "I, Robot" the three laws of robotics appear one by one, imposed over bubbling water, which had better be an intentional homage to the start of Ellison's screenplay where the three laws appear over the bubbling water of a highly advanced liquid memory system or I see a lawsuit coming." THE LAST STARFIGHTER (Movie Novelization) & DVD
by Alan Dean Foster. Screenplay by Jonathan Betuel. Movie still cover art. Condition: UNREAD 1984 Berkley paperback, first printing. Light edge wear. The DVD is the Collector's Widescreen Edition and is still shrink-wrapped. Content: "A young video game master becomes part of a real outer space war when he's called on to help defend the Star League of Planets from their arch-enemy." At the time of its original release in 1984, this modestly budgeted sci-fi excursion had the distinction of offering some of the first examples of purely computer-generated animation, an apt (and frugal) special-effects solution for a movie with a plot line rooted in computer games. Both the computer-generated visuals and the arcade game now look quaint, but writer-director Nick Castle's affable, good- hearted adventure holds up nicely. The movie was directed by Nick Castle and starred Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Will Wheaton, and Meg Wylie. [1 set available]

LOST HORIZON
by James Hilton. Condition: NEW 1988 Pocket paperback (first edition 1939), reprint. Content: Four kidnapped survivors of a plane crash are rescued and taken to the Valley of the Blue Moon in Tibetan mountains where they discover peace, fantasy, and a great secret. Lost Horizon is less about its characters and their siutation--interesting though those elements may be--than it is about their thoughts and ideas. Written as it was on eve of World War II, these thoughts and ideas center upon developing a way of life that preserves, rather than destroys, that which is finest in both humanity and the world in general. The 1937 movie was directed (of course) by Frank Capra and starred Jane Wyatt, Ronald Coleman, Edward Everett Horton, John Howard, Sam Jaffe, Thomas Mitchell, Gloria Stone, & H. B. Warner. A perfect movie. [Note: if you buy a copy of the movie, my suggestion is not to get the "restored" version where the movie is stopped periodically and movie stills are shown while "lost" dialogue is spoken. Really bad, IMHO.] [1 copy available]

LOST IN SPACE
by Joan Vinge (The Summer Queen). Based on screenplay by Akiva Goldsman. Color movie stills section. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 1998 HarperPrism paperback, second printing. Light edge wear. There is a spine crease but I feel that's from people looking at the photos. Content: The new feature film, contains more suspense, violence, action, technology, gadgetry, and weaponry, more ecological, political, and family values, and, of course, more sex than we're used to in the old reruns. The story, radically enhanced, begins with the Robinson family taking off into space on a humanitarian mission to find a new world, as Earth is soon to be inhabitable. But things go awry early in the voyage when the evil stowaway-turned-prisoner Dr. Smith sabotages the ship and the famous "Danger, Will Robinson" robot. From this point forward, the similarities between the old series and the new adaptation are abandoned. Their travel adventures include an encounter with deadly alien monsters, a brush with time-displacement where they meet their future selves, and a crash landing in such detail that it can almost be visualized. The 1998 movie was directed by Stephen Hopkins and starred Gary Oldman, William Hurt, Matt Le Blanc, Mimi Rogers, Heather Graham, Jared Harris, June Lockhart, and Angela Cartwright. THE LOST WORLD (A&E/BBC Miniseries/TV Movie)
by Arthur Conan Doyle. BBC cover artwork. Edited with notes by Philip Gooden. Condition: NEW 2002 Penguin Trade Paperback, first printing. Movie Edition. Remainder. Content: Since this is a story we all know, I'll concentrate on the TV movie. Professor Challenger reveals the existence of a remote plateau in the Amazon jungle where dinosaurs have survived. He returns there leading an expedition. Not only are dinosaurs found and confronted, but also highly evolved apes, Amazonian Indians who think Challenger a god, and, on the way, the attractive orphaned niece of a lonely missionary. Theology intervenes in this exercise in vindicating Darwin and the missionary twice attempts to sabotage the mission. After much excitement, love is found in unexpected places, and, confronted by civilization, as represented by the Royal Society in London, Challenger changes his story. The 2002 A&E/BBC miniseries starred Bob Hoskins, the great James Fox, Tom Ward, Matthew Rhys, Peter Falk, and Elaine Cassidy. [1 copy available]

THE LOST WORLD (Original Novel)
by Arthur Conan Doyle. Intro by Ian Duncan. Condition: NEW 1995 Oxford Univ. Press Trade Paperback, second printing. Tiny edge wear with tanning to page edges. Content: Doyle's 1912 novel introduced his other great character, Professor Challenger. The original "dinosaurs still living in a hidden jungle" tale, this timeless adventure has inspired everything from King Kong to Jurassic Park and is still the best of the lot. This is the terror-adventure tale of The Lost World. Writing not long after dinosaurs first invaded the popular imagination, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle spins a yarn about an expedition of two scientists, a big-game hunter, and a journalist (the narrator) to a volcanic plateau high over the vast Amazon rain forest. The bickering of the professors (a type Doyle knew well from his medical training) serves as witty contrast to the wonders of flora and fauna they encounter, building toward a dramatic moonlit chase scene with a Tyrannosaurus Rex. And the character of Professor George E. Challenger is second only to Sherlock Holmes in the outrageous force of his personality: he's a big man with an even bigger ego, and if you can grit your teeth through his racist behavior toward Native Americans, he's a lot of fun. THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK (Or Jurassic Park, Part 2)
by Michael Crichton. Condition: NEW 1996 Ballantine paperback, 9th printing. Hologram cover art. Content: Since this book is mostly about another movie, I'll just give you the movie blurb. Four years after the failure of Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar, John Hammond reveals to Ian Malcolm that there was another island ("Site B") on which dinosaurs were bred before being transported to Isla Nublar. Left alone since the disaster, the dinosaurs have flourished, and Hammond is anxious that the world see them in their "natural" environment before they are exploited. The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Attenborough, Vince Vaughn (Vince Vaughn???), and the great character actor, Peter Stormare as Dieter Stark. MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME
by Joan Vinge (The Snow Queen). Based on screenplay by Tery Hayes & George Miller. Mel Gibson & Tina Turner cover. B&W movie stills section. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1985 Warner Books paperback, first printing. Light edge wear with a pale spine crease from people looking at the movie stills. Not bad, but there. Content: When his vehicle and all his possessions are looted by the eccentric pilot Jerediah and his son Jerediah Jr. The Road Warrior known as Max Rockatansky arrives in the desert town "Bartertown" ruled by the evil Aunt Entity, where people living in the post-apocalyptic Australian outback go to trade for food, water, weapons and supplies. After being forced to fight Master Blaster, a tiny man and his masked muscle-man in "Thunderdome" a gladiator like arena, when being caught up in a power struggle for control for Bartertown. Max is banished into the desert wasteland, where he is rescued by a tribe of children, who thinks Max is a pilot named Captain Walker, who is the chosen one who will take the children to the promised land "Tomorrow Morrow Land", and learns the children are survivors of a plane crash and Captain Walker was their leader. Agreeing to help the children in their search for "Tomorrow Morrow Land", Max and the children set off across the desert wastelands and returns to Bartertown, where Max has score to settle with Aunt Entity. Reviewer: "Unlike so many other novelizations of movies that are poorly written and appear to be little more than a cheap attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the movie, this one is good. The writing is splendid and the story keeps very close to the action in the movie. It also fleshes out the action a little bit by giving some background on the history of Mad Max, Aunty Entity and Master. If you have seen the original movie, then the information on Max will not be new, however if you haven't, then it will be helpful. This is one of the best movie novelizations that I have ever read." The 1985 movie was directed by George Miller and George Ogilvie and starred Mel Gibson, Tina Turner, Bruce Spence, and Adam Cockburn. [1 copy available]

MEGIDDO: The Omega Code 2 (Movie novelization)
by Paul Crouch with Cynthia Cirile. Screenplay by John Fasano & Steven Blinn. Cover art by P.O.V. Design. Condition: NEW 2001 Charisma House Trade Paperback, first printing. Small edgewear. Content: I have to admit I am not familar with this work, but the books says it is a movie novelization and the blurb for the movie says it is based on the book. Hmmm. Megiddo is a supernatural ride into a world teetering on the edge of the Apocalypse. It follows the rise of a Machiavellian leader bent on amassing the armies of the world for the battle of Armageddon while calamities of Biblical proportions pummel the Earth. Though both prequel and sequel to The Omega Code, Megiddo works also as a stand alone story for anyone who missed its predecessor. For at its emotional core, Megiddo is the Caine and Abel story of the two men enamoured with the same woman, raised as brothers, who grew up to find themselves pitted against each other over the fate and souls of the entire world. The 2001 movie was directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith and starred Michael York, the great, under appreciated Michael Biehn, Joseph Makkar, Guy Siner, Diane Venora, Franco Nero, and Michael Paul Chan (The Closer). I have no idea if this is a good book or movie. [1 copy available]
