BECOMING A TIGER: How Baby Animals Learn to Live in the Wild
by Susan McCarthy. Condition: UNREAD 2004 HarperCollins hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Remainder mark bottom edges. Content: Reviewer: "Becoming a Tiger is really about animal behavior of all sorts, instinctual as well as learned, that of adult animals as well as of young. The book is completely understandable picked up anywhere and with no knowledge of what came before or interest in what comes after. What McCarthy has done is given us a series of short animal behavior stories taken from scientific literature but run through her considerable wit and sprightly -- even sassy -- literary style. The author has a thesis of sorts, but the true message of this book is that anyone who believes animal behavior to be simplistic or consistent across species is ridiculously mistaken and that no one will ever go broke betting on the complexity of the natural world." A CHORUS OF BUFFALO: A Personal Portrait Of An American Icon
by Ruth Rudner. Beautiful cover photo by David Meunch. Condition: NEW 2003 Marlowe Trade Paperback, first printing. Content: Contrary to popular belief, the American buffalo is not extinct - but it is in trouble. In this passionate volume, Rudner mixes lyrical anecdotes and meditative essays to explore the buffalo's fragile existence, its uncertain future and the politics swirling around the iconic animal. Because buffalo sometimes carry brucellosis, a bovine disease that can cause incurable, debilitating undulant fever in humans and irregular fertility in cattle - and because ranchers are required to kill off entire cattle herds at the first sign of it - the roaming rights of buffalo occupy a central place in Western agricultural politics. Traveling across bison country, Rudner interviews the interested parties, watches the buffalo roam and weighs the merits of all sides. In the end, she comes down on the side of those environmental groups and private citizens who want public lands to be made available to free-ranging bison. Ranchers' fears, she argues, are exaggerated; indeed, there is no known instance of brucellosis transmission from wild buffalo to grazing domestic cattle. Rudner's reverence for the magnificent creature shines through her descriptions of firsthand encounters - on the Dakota prairie, in Yellowstone backcountry, on a Chippewa/Cree reservation (where only five buffalo remain) and on a Sioux reservation (where a thriving herd of more than 400 buffalo live). Throughout, she evenhandedly considers the often-conflicting views of environmentalists, ranchers, park rangers, biologists, animal rights groups, Indians who eat buffalo meat and backpackers who, like herself, view the buffalo as a living link to nature's wildness. THE FAITHFUL ELEPHANTS: A True Story of Animals, People and War
translated from the Japanese by Tomoko Tsuchiya Dykes. Color illustrations by Ted Lewin. Condition: UNREAD 1991 Trumpet soft cover, first printing. Content: This book has a true message about war - but is a heart-rending, gut-wrenching story for people who love animals and don't watch them eating each other on Animal Planet. A zookeeper narrates the story of how there came to be graves at the zoo: when Tokyo was showered with bombs during the bleak days of World War II, the authorities feared that if the zoo were destroyed, the animals might accidentally be freed and wreak havoc on the city. So they decided that all the zoo animals would be killed. But the elephants wouldn't eat the poisonous food they were offered, and the needles in the syringes containing poison broke before they could penetrate the elephants' rough skin. So the elephants were starved to death, a slow and painful process watched by the zookeepers who loved them. An upsetting story for children or adults, this powerfully conveys the deadly side effects of war. Lewin's watercolors show the massive gray bodies in their state of decline; it is impossible not to appreciate the heartbreak of the animals' plight. But this is a book that provokes questions about the nature of death and dying (children may read into this that some may be killed for the greater good of all), and so should be chosen with care. All ages. [NOTE: The Japanese version of this book states that to show the people of Japan that in this war, people would have to be ready to sacrifice anything for their country. If it was necessary, the lives of animals or even other people would have to be given up for the good of Japan. The US version does not include this tidbit.} Questions welcome. [1 copy only]

Content: Reviewer: "Embark on an incredible safari in search of mysterious creatures whose very existence are still unrecognized by science, and which have never before been collected together in one book, yet which could well comprise some of the most dramatic zoological discoveries of the future. The Sri Lankan horned jackal and the Singhalese devil bird, the horrific bloodsucking 'death bird' of Ethiopia, an enigmatic hairless blue horse from South Africa, winged feathered serpents from Wales and other British mystery beasts, flesh-eating deer and bird-eating sheep, a triple-headed river monster from Bolivia and winged cats from India, monstrous sharks and monster jellyfishes, mystery bears of the world, rainbow dragons and marine elephants, the Beast of Bodalog, giant horned lizards from British Columbia, the real Golden Fleece, Quebec's water dragon, Lake Tahoe's Tessie, and even a living dinosaur or two from the Orient - all have been reported by reliable eyewitnesses and demand attention and investigation by science. Bringing together a handsome selection of Dr Shuker's popular cryptozoological articles originally published in FATE Magazine and now specially updated and expanded to incorporate the very latest information available, and containing a vast fund of data and illustrations (some of which have not been published in 100-200 years), From Flying Toads To Snakes With Wings is a unique, compelling survey of the world's most elusive and mystifying creatures - the beasts that hide from man." GHOSTS OF TSAVO: Stalking the Mystery Lions of East Africa
And THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS movie (VHS)

by Philip Caputo. B&W and color photo section. . Condition: NEW 2002 National Geographic hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Although the 1996 movie was based on Patterson's own account of the lion incident, this book helps with the understanding of the "incident" and the real maneless lions of Tsavo. In 1898, two maneless male lions killed and devoured 135 Indian and African workers constructing a railroad bridge over the Tsavo River in Kenya. It took Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson, the engineer in charge of the project, nine months to hunt and kill the beasts, an ordeal recounted in his 1907 book, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo, and later the subject of two films, 1952's Bwana Devil and 1996's The Ghost and the Darkness. A century later, the story of Ghost and Darkness still fascinates and terrifies. Were they just rogue lions, or were they the "missing genetic link" between the prehistoric cave cats who hunted early humans and the modern African lion? Caputo seeks answers to this intriguing question as he accompanies two separate expeditions to study the maneless lions of Tsavo. Read the book; see the movie; take your heart medication! The 1996 movie was directed by Stephen Hopkins and starred the great Val Kilmer, Michael Douglas, Tom Wilkinson, John Kani, Bernard Hill, and the great African actor Henry Cele. Not to be missed! GOING, GOING, GONE?: Animals and plants on the brink of extinctin and how you can help (Which One Will You Save?)
by Malcolm Tait. Beautiful color photos of each animal/plant. Condition: NEW 2008 Think Books (UK) soft cover, first printing. Content: Reviewer: "I usually judge books like this by whether they teach me stuff I didn't know, and by that standard, this book is amazing. The authors/editor did an great job of showing the diversity of the world when they picked their conservation groups. For example I had never heard of the Wollemi Pine from Australia, now I am looking to order my seedling to support their efforts. I won't list the groups they polled but it is impressive, ranging from giants like the WWF to small single species groups like Fundacion Jocotoco. And just as impressive as the editor's choices of conservation groups are the species the groups chose. The species chosen were obviously well thought out from Tadpole shrimp to YellowHammers to Common Skates. The 100 examples represent biodiversity very well and tell 100 timely and compelling conservation stories from the critically endangered to the surprisingly threatened. Some animals are standard poster species like Pandas while others are little known species that have suffered from their obscurity like the Ethiopian Wolf or Pygmy Hog. I'm not sure what I was expecting [when I bought this book], but it wasn't this. It far outweighed any expectation I had with it's content. The content is not particularly deep in coverage, but with the links to the conservation groups, it unlocks doors to endless additional information." Questions encouraged. [ 1 copy left]

GORILLAS IN THE MIST
by Dian Fossey. Three B&W photo sections. B&W drawings by Jay Matternas. Sigourney Weaver movie still front cover. Condition: UNREAD 1988 Houghton Mifflin Trade Paperback, movie edition. Tiny edgewear. Content: In 1963, an occupational therapist from Kentucky, in uncertain health and spirits, traveled to central Africa in the quixotic hope of seeing a mountain gorilla in its natural habitat. Dian Fossey had read everything she could about the reclusive and much-feared animal, and she returned from her trip convinced that most of the books were wrong. During her seven-week stay in Africa, Fossey had a chance encounter with the famed primatologists Mary and Louis Leakey, who encouraged her to follow her dream of living among the mountain gorillas and learning their ways. In 1967 she did just that, setting up a camp on the slopes of the 14,000-foot Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda and studying four gorilla families there. Although it took them some time to accept Fossey's presence among them, she was immediately impressed by their peaceful nature and by their generous, guileless behavior--so unlike the images found in popular culture. But, Fossey discovered, despite their peaceable way of life, the gorillas had many enemies in the form of poachers who hunted them for their hands, skins, and heads--ghastly remains sold to the tourist market. Much of Fossey's thoughtful but often rightly angry memoir Gorillas in the Mist is a well-reasoned plea for the protection of the gorillas and the suppression of the poachers' black market. That argument found a wide audience when her book was published in 1983, but Fossey's work remains unfinished: she was murdered, probably by those very poachers, in 1985, and today there are fewer than 650 mountain gorillas in the wild. To read this book is a first step for anyone concerned with their preservation, and that of other wild species everywhere. The wonderful 1988 movie was directed by Michael Apted and starred Sigourney Weaver, Bryan Brown, Julie Harris, John Omirah Miluwi, Iain Cuthbertson, & Gordon Masten. A classic - both the book & the movie. [1 copy available]

A GUIDE TO THE CARNIVORES OF CENTRAL AMERICA: Natural History, Ecology, & Conservation
by Carlos L. De La Rosa and Claudia C. Nocke. Wonderful B&W drawings of the animals & maps. Condition: NEW 2000 University of Texas Press Trade Papaerback, first edition, first printing. Content: Carnivores such as pumas, jaguars, and ocelots have roamed the neotropical forests of Central America for millennia. Enshrined in the myths of the ancient Maya, they still inspire awe in the region's current inhabitants, as well as in the ecotourists and researchers who come to experience Central America's diverse and increasingly endangered natural environment. This book is one of the first field guides dedicated to the carnivores of Central America. It describes the four indigenous families -- wild cats, raccoons and their relatives, skunks and their relatives, and wild canids -- and their individual species that live in the region. The authors introduce each species by recounting a first-person encounter with it, followed by concise explanations of its taxonomy, scientific name, English and Spanish common names, habitat, natural history, and conservation status. Range maps show the animal's past and current distribution, while Claudia Nocke's black-and-white drawings portray it visually. The concluding chapter looks to the carnivores' future, including threats posed by habitat destruction and other human activities, and describes some current conservation programs. Designed for citizens of and visitors to Central America, as well as specialists, this book offers an excellent introduction to a group of fascinating, threatened, and still imperfectly understood animals. In the book, a little tome of 190 pages, he discusses a whole range of animals he studies notably, often from his own home where he keeps an entire managerie of ducks, geese, jackdaws, parrots, dogs, hamsters, water shrews etc etc. The whole house is alive with the raucous cries and crazy comings and goings of his companions. He gives much to the reader such as how to manage an aquarium properly, how to look after animals correctly so their lives are well lived and the book is chocka-block full of animal tales. The kind of tales myths and legends are grown from. I mean that the tales are often so remarkable, e.g. the intelligence shown by his pet raven or the story of two men carrying a canoe followed by several goslings, a large red dog and some ducklings. LAST CHANCE TO SEE
by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine. Color photo section. Condition: UNREAD 1991 Ballantine Trade Paperback edition, 19th printing. Pale tanning to page edges. Content: Reviewer: "Douglas Adams' sense of humour is so strong, it could inject a bucketful of laughs into an obituary. Needless to say I wasn't surprised when this book, his elegy for endangered species, turned out to have a welcome balance between laughter and melancholy. Adams is joined by zoologist Mark Carwardine, as they use their last chance to see a variety of animals on the brink of extinction, such as the Komodo Dragon, the White Rhinos of Zaire, New Zealand kakapos, and Yangtze river dolphins. Adams, amateur wildlife lover, is wise enough to know the purpose of his journey: to shine some of the glare from his celebrity as a "science-fiction comedy novelist" on the issue of global extinction. He does wisely not to downplay the plight of these animals in the favour of commerciality, but manages to produce an entertaining work nonetheless. Carwardine, and the other people we encounter, sometimes come off as little more than characters in a Douglas Adams novel. Nonetheless, the characters' eccentricities further shed light on the kinds of people who are willing to undertake the monumental task of saving these beautiful beasts. It is not work for the dispassionate." Think of this as the Hitchhiker's Guide to Endangered Species. [1 copy available]

LOOKING FOR SEABIRDS: Journal from an Alaskan Voyage
text & illustrations by Sophie Webb. Beautiful color maps and watercolor graphics of the birds. Condition: NEW 2004 Houghton Mifflin hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: The natural history diarist who earned a Sibert Honor for My Season with Penguins: An Antarctic Journal now invites readers to join her aboard the Alpha Helix, a research vessel, on a month-long expedition to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. She is there to count seabirds, whose population density can help researchers gauge the ocean's health. The birds involved here probably won't garner the same instant enthusiasm among young children as waddling, tuxedoed penguins, and Webb's shipboard vantage point precludes the hands-on interactions that enlivened her first book. However, the text and accompanying watercolors are just as brimming with gritty details (it's wise not to serve spherical foods on a boat, because they roll off the plate), and children will feel Webb's delight in the moments that make the rigors of field research worth it: a glimpse of Crested Auklets "like something out of Dr. Seuss' imagination" or an albatross that commutes from Hawaii to Alaska to collect food, then backtracks 5,600 miles to nourish its waiting chicks. THE MEDICI GIRAFFE And Other Tales of Exotic Animals and Power
by Marina Belozerskaya. Beautiful wrap-around cover art by Marc Burkhardt. B&W woodcuts and photos illustrate. Condition: NEW 2006 Little Brown hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Small remainder mark top edges at spine. Content: Exotic animals have always been symbols of power, and the gift of exotic animals was a common way for rulers to cement alliances. he title of this masterful and beguiling book is misleading. In Belozersakya's adept hands, exotic animals are mere jumping off points for marvelous adventures through worlds ranging from bustling, heroic Alexandria, Egypt, circa 300 B.C., to the creepy confines of William Randolph Hearst's San Simeon in the mid-20th century. While each of the seven sections revolves around exotic animals—a giraffe in Medici Florence, menageries in 16th-century Prague and Napoleonic France—it's the story that Belozersakya weaves around these beasts that draws the reader on. A common thread is the obsession caused by these fanciful beasts. Rudolf II, spent so much of his kingdom's fortune on collecting animals that there wasn't always enough money to feed his voracious lions. . "This might explain why on several occasions the Emperor had to recompense servants and subjects mauled by his felines." A meticulous researcher, the Russian-born Belozersakya, an art historian who has taught at Harvard and Tufts, uses these tales to consider how exotic animals have served as diplomatic gifts, as "symbols of power and learning," as mirrors of the cultures that prized them. This is a sumptuous read - smart, funny and utterly compelling. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

McGowan looks at several kinds of predator-prey relationships, examining such creatures as the supposedly rapacious crocodile (a surprisingly light eater, when all the facts are in), the big cats (whose prey usually outweighs them but cannot compete with a lion's or tiger's explosive force), and a host of snakes, spiders, and insects. THE SOUL OF THE WOLF
by Michael W. Fox. B&W photos througout. Condition: UNREAD 1980 Little, Brown hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), no printing given. DJ shows light edge wear. Content: A beautiful look at the wolf and his life style from a man who lived with them in the wild. Reviewer: "In contrast to the average unthinking selfish denizen of the modern world, who tacitly agrees to the prevailing evil, and who seemingly couldn't care less about the sufferings of animals, Fox comes over not merely as a concerned and compassionate figure, but as a truly saintly person. He has lived with wolves. He has seen very deeply into their nature. He respects them as fellow creatures with whom we have many things in common, but who at the same time are vastly superior to us in many respects. And he has understood, of course, that they too have a soul. His book is at one and the same time both inspiring and profoundly saddening. We are inspired by the marvel that is the wolf; we are sickened at modern man's treatment of this fellow creature." Stop the slaughter! Make a little room for wolves. [1 copy available]

VAMPIRO: The Vampire Bat in Fact and Fantasy
by David E. Brown. B&W drawings and maps by Randy Babb. Also B&W photos and movie posters. . Condition: NEW 1999 Univ. of Utah Press Trade Paperback, assumed first printing. Content: No bat so fires our imagination and is more renowned than the common vampire bat of tropical America. The vampire's singular diet of warm blood, its stealthy nighttime attacks, and its capability of transmitting deadly diseases, all strike us with fear mixed with fascination. It comes as no surprise that the vampire bat has assumed not only the real-life role, but acquired the persona of its mythical Old World counterpart. By giving this bat the ability to metamorphose in and out of human form in countless horror stories and films, we have bestowed on this small mammal a notoriety unmatched by any other animal on earth. Reality and superstition have become intertwined. But there also exists an enormous amount of reliable information on the vampire bat. Zoologist David Brown has gathered and distilled this wealth of studies, and sifted through the mythology of the REVIEW: "vampyre" to present a picture of the vampire bat in true-life form. Although written for the non-biologist, even bat-specialists will appreciate Brown's factual presentation of the life story of the vampire bat. "This is a delightful book. . . . For cavers interested in learning more about one of the most intriguing creatures that frequently dwell in Latin American caves, it is highly recommended. For aficionados of the vampyre in film and literature, it is must reading." Also included is a discussion of the Vampire movies we all love and dread. Neat book! [2 copies left]

A WHALE FOR THE KILLING
by Farley Mowat. Condition: UNREAD 1973 Penguin paperback, no printin given. Although there is a pale spine crease, it is a binding mark. Light tanning to white cover edges. Content: WARNING! This is not an easy book to read - it is a sad book and not for very young kids, IMHO. When an 80-ton Fin Whale became trapped in a Newfoundland lagoon, conservationist Farley Mowat rejoiced: here was the first chance to study at close range one of the most magnificent animals in creation. Some local villagers thought otherwise. They blasted the whale with rifle fire and hacked open her back with a motorboat propeller. Mowat appealed desperately to the police, to marine biologists, finally to the Canadian press. But it was too late. Ravaged by an infection resulting from her massive wounds, the whale died. World-renowned for his passionate tales of survival, Farley Mowat wrote his new book to symbolize the plight of all whales preyed on by man for commercial profit. A Whale for the Killing is an urgent, eloquent plea to stop the massacre now...before the entire species is doomed to extinction. Save the Whales, please! [1 copy available]

WHY CATS PAINT: A theory of feline aesthetics
by Heather Busch and Burton Silver. Adorable color photos by the Authors. Condition: NEW 1994 Ten Speed large soft cover, second printing. Tiny shelf wear. Interior perfect. Content: An unprecedented photographic record of cat creativity that will intrigue cat-lovers and art-lovers alike. As far as we know, no theory of feline aesthetics has yet been presented, at least not with such remarkable clarity and thorough documentation. Reviewer: "The writing style mimics most art criticism and art history pieces, so if you're familiar with that genre, you'll appreciate the genius of this book. It pokes fun at art critism while playing on most people's bafflement as to what constitutes art. This book is a joke, although it's so flawlessly constructed you can't be sure at first. The cat metaphor makes a great commentary on the ridiculousness of much art writing. Even if you've never been forced to read ridiculous art criticism, you'll appreciate this book if you love cats." WINGS ALONG THE WATERWAY
by Mary Barrett Brown. Beautiful watercolor paintings of the birds. Condition: NEW 1999 Orchard Books large softcover. Perfect. Content: A look at 21 birds found in wetlands across the U. S. Text and art combine to offer a skillful presentation that is by turn energetic, picturesque, straightforward, and descriptive. Brown is at her best, however, when she describes a particular behavior (e.g., the osprey rising from the water). A short chapter is devoted to each bird; carefully chosen words give readers the sense of firsthand observation, while the pictures offer the same element of surprise as experienced while bird-watching. Species are observed from afar, seen close up, grouped within a landscape, positioned in solitary splendor, shown in flight or in nesting sites, or frozen in position for camouflage. Vibrant hues of sunset shimmer over habitats, while dark, shadowy backgrounds emphasize the beauty of the birds, such as the snowy egrets. Themes of the necessity of protecting wetland habitats from overdevelopment and of lessons from the past when many species were threatened by pesticides and the whims of fashion are threaded throughout the text. The table of contents and index provide access for information-seekers, while the format will appeal to those wishing to read the book from beginning to end. A beautiful and informative presentation. For grades 4 - 6. but bird lovers of every age will enjoy this book. [1 copy left]
