OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOOD: A Thanksgiving Poem
by Lydia Maria Child. Beautiful color woodcuts by Christopher Manson illustrate. Condition: NEW c. 2005 North South large soft cover, no printing given. Content: This attractive new presentation of Child's 1844 poem,"A Boy's Thanksgiving Day" (among several early titles) offers full-page woodcuts done in a detailed and delicately primitive style. The colors are pleasingly light and clear. The childlike illustrations are in keeping with the unsophisticated nature of the rhyming text. The text is placed unobtrusively in the sky or on the snow-covered ground, and probably sings better than it reads. A piano arrangement of the familiar melody, a traditional French folk tune, is placed after the text. Child's time-honored poem successfully evokes the happy mood of a traditional and idealized family holiday gathering. Grades 2 - 5. [1 copy available]

THE THANKSGIVING SURPRISE (AKA Turkey Surprise)
by Peggy ARcher. Color illustrations by Thor Wickstrom. Condition: UNREAD 2007 Scholastic soft cover. Blank book plate inside front cover. Content: Here's a Thanksgiving picture book for vegetarians. Two Pilgrim brothers hunting for a Thanksgiving turkey sing a rhyming chant ("We'll pluck him and stuff him, / and cook him up right"). The cheerful line-and-watercolor pictures show the turkey hiding from the hunters--in a tree, a gopher hole, a pond, and a woodpile. The littlest Pilgrim isn't sure he wants to pluck out the turkey's feathers, stuff the bird with breadcrumbs, and cook it, and he eventually persuades the bigger Pilgrim that there are more delicious things than turkey to bring home for the feast. Hunters and hunted are treated with a light touch, and kids will identify with the turkey as well as with the small Pilgrim, who changes his companion and turns things around. The final spread says it all, showing the family enjoying a delicious feast as the turkey peers through the window. Pre-school - K. [1 copy available]

TURKEYS, PILGRIMS, AND INDIAN CORN
by Edna Barth. Two-tone color illustrations by Ursula Arndt. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1975 Clarion Bookds Trade Paperback, 14th printing (c. 1990s). Name top front loose end page. Rest of interior perfect. Content: Turkeys, pumpkins, cranberries, ears of multicolored Indian corn - the fruits of the harvest spilling out of an animal horn. How did these colorful festive foods become the symbols of the first American holiday? This book explores the history of the first American Thanksgiving and traces it to its sources in the harveset festivals of the egyptians, Hebrews, Greeks, and Celts. Like those ancient celebrations, Thanksgiving reminds us of how much we depend on the earth, and helps us to renew our ties with it. Reviewer: "This book is well-researched and very informative. It is written for an upper-elementary/middle school reader, but is still a great resource for the lower-elem teacher. It could be read aloud to older students in short segments, but is not intended to be shared in its entirety. It is presented in narrative form with pleasant pen-ink sketches. Great for a research project and another look at a familiar story. Good details. Doesn't skim over the unpleasantries of the time." [1 copy available]
