JAMIE O'ROURKE AND THE POOKA
story and pictures by Tomie De Paola. Condition: UNREAD 2001 Scholastic soft cover, 5th printing. Donation inscription inside front cover. Content: Award-winning author and artist Tomie de Paola has created another lively folk tale based on traditional Irish lore. Jamie O'Rourke, the laziest man in all of Ireland, has been left in charge of the house while his hard-working, long-suffering wife Eileen goes to visit her sister for a week. In spite of his plan to stay in bed the entire time (thus not "dirtyin' a thing"), Jamie's cronies come by to keep him company and eat up the grub Eileen left behind. Jamie goes back to sleep amid the mess that night, only to awaken to a mysterious donkey-man cleaning the house. Pleased at his good fortune, Jamie continues his slovenly ways all week long, watching the Pooka (Irish animal spirit, as explained in the author's note) sweep and wash every night. But lazy Jamie's luck is just about to run out... Questions welcome. [1copy available]

JUST IN TIME FOR NEW YEAR'S!: A Harry & Emily Adventure (Reading Level 2.6)
by Karen Gray Ruelle. Adorable color illustrations by the Author. Condition: NEW 2004 Holiday House hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Yippee! It's almost New Year's Eve. On the big night Harry and Emily are going to stay up until midnight. But how will they stay awake? Two kittens want to stay awake to welcome in the new year, and their parents finally agree that they are old enough to do so. The real problem is, how to keep from falling asleep when their eyes are closing and the clock moves slowly. On the big night, they finally come up with a great idea. They set all of the alarm clocks to ring just in time for midnight. This enjoyable book deals with a subject with which many youngsters can identify. The story shows Harry and Emily playing games, reading books, and bantering about who is snoring at night. The colorful illustrations depict a comfortable house, and observant readers will notice many humorous touches (such as a cat's version of Matisse's The Dance). This is a fun story that beginning readers will enjoy at holiday time or any time it's important to stay up late. Ages 4 - 8. [1 copy available]

THE MOTHER'S DAY MICE
by Eve Bunting. Color illustrations by Jan Brett. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1993 Scholastic soft cover, fourth printing. Thee is an almost-invisible "Near-crease" front cover at fore edge. Everything else is perfect. Content: Three mouse brothers, clad in bright plaid shirts and lederhosen, leave their snug cottage, intent upon finding the perfect gifts f or their mother. Their early morning search is filled with dangers: a snake hidden in the thick underbush, a fox running by. However, the mice are brave, and hand-in-tail, they traipse through brush and briars to find their presents. In the end, it is Little Mouse, returning empty-handed, who has the best surprise of all: a song. The perspective is from a mouse's vantage point: toadstools and ferns seem like trees; a ripe, juicy strawberry is so big that Middle Mouse can barely carry his gift in his two arms; a dandelion fluff ball towers over Biggest Mouse. Through deft, simple lines, Brett captures the brothers' fear, their enjoyment of the sights, smells and sounds of their world and finally, their sheer delight at finding just the right gifts for their appreciative mother. The finely honed details, the soft colors, the expressions of love and sharing make this a story that is as fresh and harmonious as Little Mouse's song. [1copy available]

OLIVE MY LOVE
by Vivian Walsh. Adorable color illustrations by J. Otto Seibold. Condition: NEW 2004 Harcourt hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: Olive, the dog that previously came to holiday fame as a wanna-be reindeer, is back in a Valentine-trimmed tale. Dexter, a winged dog, drops a giant red heart ("all of my love") on her doorstep. Believing that he lost it, Olive sets out on an adventure to return it, and a squirrel and a spider help her. When Olive finds Dexter and tries to return the heart, he tells her that it was meant as a gift. The friends open the heart-shaped candy box and enjoy a picnic of bonbons and dog biscuits. While Valentine's Day is never explicitly mentioned, the cover and the story clearly point to it. The narrative has some sweet and clever moments, but for the most part it is a mishmash. The clever squirrel seems to be useful only for his car and the spider, a black widow dressed as a hobo, comes across as strange rather than quirky. Seibold's computer-generated art still has some of the endearing qualities of the original Olive tale, but many of the pages are strangely cropped and text heavy, which detracts from the book's flow. Fans of the plucky heroine may be pleased to have her back. Too cute! [1copy available]

RAMADAN
by Susan L. Douglass. Lovely, soft color illustrations by Jeni Reeves. Condition: NEW 2002 Carolrhoda Books hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued) first printing. 48 pages. Content: The Islamic holy month of Ramadan may seem like a tough topic for beginning readers, but this On My Own Holiday Book provides an accessible, uplifting introduction. The text and illustrations both emphasize the global reach of Islam, portraying adults and children of many different backgrounds. During Ramadan, children who attempt the fast (not required for kids) endure the challenges of going without food and water and "trying to be a good person all day" by remembering to share and forgive one another. The attractive colored-pencil illustrations show children at school and at home, and the constant presence of food in the illustrations reminds children that Ramadan is not about starving as much as it is about showing respect to God. The story culminates with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, when Muslim children get presents and sweets. Words like Allah, Qur'an, and iftar are defined in a glossary. Ages 4-8. [1 copy available]

SAINT VALENTINE
retold & illustrated by . Robert Sabuda. Beautiful color "mosaic" illustrations. Condition: NEW 1992 Aladdin soft cover, 9th printing. CONTENT: How did Valentine's Day begin? It started in ancient Rome when a kind physician named Valentine took an interest in a young blind girl. With his healing skill and his deep faith he restored her sight. What we now call Valentine's Day began when he sent the little girl a secret message, which she received after the Christian martyr was executed. For this tale rich in sentiment, master illustrator Robert Sabuda has created exquisite paper mosaics to suggest early Christian art that resonates with both subtlety and power. Questions welcome. ST. PATRICK'S DAY IN THE MORNING

Content: This is a warm and lively tale set in a village in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day. The main character, Jamie, is the youngest in his family, too small to participate in the annual special parade. Disappointed, Jamie awakens early and sets out to prove them wrong. The story that follows is his march through the village, making music and creating a parade on his own, proving to himself that he is truly big enough to participate. It is one of very few good St. Patrick's Day stories. A bonus in this case is the glimpse of Irish culture and way of life. Baby-Preschool. Questions welcome. [4 copies of book available]
