HIEROGLYPHS FROM A TO Z: A Rhyming Book with Ancient Egyptian Stencils for Kids
by Peter Der Manuelian. Wonderful color illustrations by the Author. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1995 Scholastic soft cover, second printing. Light edge wear with small shelfwear loss of color back cover. Content: Reviewer: "I liked this book because it can be used with a wide age range of children. The introductory rhyme and ABC rhymes on each page are especially suited to younger children, while the smaller text at the bottom of the page gives more information for older children. For example, the page for 'R' says 'R is for rabbit. Make a move - off he'll go.' At the bottom of the page you find the hieroglyph for r, an explanation of the symbol, how to write 'rabbit' in hieroglyphs, and a little more information on rabbits in Ancient Egypt. The large picture of a rabbit on the page is a reproduction of either an ancient carving or painting. After the alphabet there are several pages giving information about the history of hieroglyphs and how to write with them which would be of interest to older children as well. A stencil is also included, but you could write your own hieroglyphs by referring to the chart at the back of the book. This book is useful for introducing information on hierglyphs and Ancient Egypt to children. Ages 4+. [1 copy available.]

MARY ENGELBREIT: HEY, KIDS! COME CRAFT WITH ME
by Mary Engelbreit. Carol Dahlstrom Editor. Condition: NEW 1999 Meredith Press large hardcover over sprital binding (pictorial boards), first printing. Content: Budding Martha Stewarts will squeal over this book. The directions and photographs are clear, the supply lists are thorough, and traceable patterns are included. Alternate suggestions are given in case the project is too upscale or expensive. The first craft sets the tone. It explains how to design a special chair. After an adult has measured and determined the amount of fabric needed to cover it, children then personalize the cloth with their drawings or writings. The third and final step is for the adult to take the fabric and chair to an upholstery shop where it can be professionally covered. The backup plan should this prove to be impossible is to design a pillow or place mat instead. Fortunately, most of the following projects are less ambitious. They include nature crafts such as twig picture frames, costumes and accessories, patterns for tea-party place settings, paper crafts such as greeting cards and stationery, and dozens more. The book is loaded with ideas, many of which smack of cuteness, but they can serve as catalysts for other activities by inventive children. Grades 3 - 7. Questions encouraged. [1 copy available]

MY FIRST GREEN BOOK: A life-size guide to caring for our environment
by Angela Wilkes. Great color, step-by-step detailed color "how-to" photos. All photos are in color. It's the DK way. Condition: NEW 1996 DK over-size hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), second printing. Content: Aimed at a younger audience than most recent guides to becoming a "green" consumer, this oversized volume explains environmental concerns clearly without oversimplifying them. In addition to delivering her message succinctly, Wilkes provides hands-on activities that demonstrate the importance of pitching in to protect our planet. Similar in format to the publisher's popular Eyewitness series, the book is filled with large-scale, color photos that effectively illustrate such experiments as those that show how clean the air is, how acid rain affects plants, how various objects biodegrade at different rates (if at all) and why rain forests are so crucial to the Earth. Other projects include creating a wildlife garden in a flower box, planting a tree and organizing a "green campaign" with one's friends. This practical book teaches critical lessons that even the youngest readers should learn. Ages 7-10. [1 copy left]
