AHOY THERE, LITTLE POLAR BEAR
text and illustratins by Hans de Beer. Adorable color illustrations. Condition: NEW 1995 North-South soft cover, first paperback printing. Tiny edgewear. Content: Lars, a little Arctic Polar Bear, jumps in the sea to catch a fish, but it is he himself who gets caught in a giant net! Dumped into the hold of a ship with piles of slimy fish, he is taken away from his icy home in the North Pole. Up on the ship's deck, he meets the ship's cat Nemo, whom he asks to help him get home. They both creep ashore at the next port, to a town where Lars's white fur gets very dirty, and another cat arranges for him to hop aboard a ship heading back to the North Pole. Soon enough, the young cub is reunited with his loving parents. "Lars was happy to be home again, but often he sat and stared out to sea looking for ships--and ship's cats." While the story line is simple, de Beer's illustrations are quite endearing. Young children will be taken in by Lars's harmless adventuring and safe return home. (Baby to preschool) [1copy available]

ALEJANDRO'S GIFT
by Richard E. Albert. Beautiful illustrations in Southwestern colors by Sylvia Long. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, c. 2000 Trumpet soft cover (stapled wraps), 5th printing. Poor shelving has produced a slight "bend" to the fore edges. Working on that! Content: Alejandro, a man in his 60s, lives in a small adobe house beside an isolated desert road. His only companion is a burro. To ease his loneliness, he tends to his garden. One day, a ground squirrel approaches the garden to drink from its furrows, followed by wood rats, pocket gophers, jackrabbits, kangaroo rats, pocket mice, roadrunners, gila woodpeckers, and thrashers. Time passes more quickly, and Alejandro enjoys his new companions. However, he soon realizes that they come to him for water, not for company, and sets out to dig a water hole for them. Albert's simple and poetic text evokes the silence and emptiness in Alejandro's life. He grows to understand his interdependence with the land and its creatures as he lives among them. Long's rich, detailed, and realistically rendered pictures provide the perfect visual setting to an already memorable tale. The colorfully illustrated glossary of flora and fauna is informative. An ideal book to develop in readers an appreciation for the beauty of the desert and its inhabitants. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

BAREE: The Story of a Wolf-Dog
by James Oliver Curwood. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1991 Newmarket Press Trade Paperback, 7th printing. Tiny edge wear with tanning to page edges. Content: An adventure-filled, realistic novel about the first year in the life of Baree, who is torn between his wolf-half and his dog-half, and who must learn to survive and be accepted in two worlds. He is befriended by a young girl and her trapper father, whom he defends against her father's boss, the personification of evil. Curwood's excellent power of description helps readers witness the beauty of and death in nature. However, his strength is in enabling readers to empathize with Baree. The sentences are short and easy to read, making this a quality choice for reluctant readers. Concern over the success of the villain will entice them to keep reading. The heroine is almost too pure and the villain almost too evil, but it fits in this story. Sometimes it is necessary to look to the context for meaning since there are untranslated Indian and French phrases. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

Content: Reviewer: "The first of Walter Farley's twenty-one books, written while the author was in high school and published in 1941, before he graduated from college, "The Black Stallion" has become a staple in children's literature. It tells the story of Alec Ramsay and his partnership with a remarkable horse, referred to only as the Black. While returning from a trip to India, Alec's ship is wrecked in a storm, leaving he and the Black as the only survivors, washed up on a small, deserted island. For nineteen days they must survive in that desolate place, and in this time a strong bond is formed between the boy and the wild Arab horse. Once Alec and the Black are rescued by a passing ship, the story takes a different turn. Back in New York, Alec asks a neighbor if he might stable the Black in the old barn on his property. As it turns out, Henry Dailey is a former racehorse trainer, and he immediately recognizes the Black's potential for speed. Thus, man and boy pair up in order to train the spirited horse, hoping to harness his energy and turn him into a competitive runner. The 1979 movie was directed by Carroll Ballard and starred Mickey Rooney, Terry Reno, Teri Garr, Hoyt Axton and Michael Higgins. There was also a TV series in the 60s also starring Mickey Rooney. CALL OF THE WOLVES (A Blue Ribbon Book)
by Jim Murphy. Simply beautiful color illustrations by mark Alan Weatherby. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 2008 Scholastic soft cover, 5th printing. Very light edge wear. Interior perfect. Content: With the threat of snow in the air, a wolf pack follows a herd of caribou to its winter feeding ground. The promise of the hunt is interrupted by the sudden arrival by air of illegal hunters (whether for wolf or caribou is unclear). In the confusion that follows, a young wolf is cut off from his pack, hurts his leg, but escapes. His subsequent journey takes him through dangerous territory as he meets a strange wolf pack, tangles with sled dogs, and finally reunites with his own pack. The exquisite ice-blue pages portray the majestic arctic wilderness in a wintry, snowy, half-light. Weatherby's animals spring to life, and he adeptly captures the movement, the stillness, the danger, and the calm of the text. Like Yoshida's Young Lions (Philomel, 1989) , this should help generate appreciation for animals in the wild, and is also concerned with issues of separation and connection. An afterword provides additional information about wolves. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

THE CAT WHO WENT TO HEAVEN
by Elizabeth Coatsworth. Three-tone color illustrations by Lynd Ward. Condition: UNREAD, BUT NOT PERFECT, 1962 Macmillian hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, third printing. Light edge wear to DJ edges. DJ is price-clipped. Evidently this book was an unappreciated gift. Content: Reviewer: "This is the story of a cat who came to live in the household of a struggling Japanese artist and in the end brought him great luck. At the time that the cat enters the picture, the artist and his housekeeper barely have anything to eat but that does not stop the housekeeper from doing an illogical thing. She brings home another mouth to feed, the cat. The artist who knows better than to go along with this action is nevertheless so kind hearted that the cat stays. With the introduction of the cat into this household it seems that there is a change in the fortunes of this household. The artist is suddenly given an important commission to paint a portrait of Buddha by the local temple. While the artist commences to create his painting carefully and thoughtfully, the cat who may have had something to do with the reversal of fortune for this household, sticks by close to the artist almost begging to be included in the commissioned work. That a cat be included in a portrait of Buddha seems an insurmountable obstacle in that it is was believed that the cat along of all animals refused to accept the teachings of Buddha. The reader will no doubt be profoundly touched by the answer to the question as whether the cat will get his wish. This is a beautifully written and illustrated work. The pictures bring the work of the artist to us, a living canvas as the painting grows and grows. Whoever introduces this book to children does them a profound favor. Ages 8 and up. THE CAT WHO WOULDN'T COME INSIDE (A True Story)
by Cynthia von Buhler. Color illustrations by the Author. Condition NEW 2006 Houghton Mifflin hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Content: This cumulative story, told by a redheaded, doll-like figure, features a stray feline outside a house on a cold wintry day. The woman asks the cat to come inside, but he runs away. The following day, she puts out a bowl of warm milk; the critter laps it up and leaves. Next, she leaves him a bowl of milk and a plate of tuna, but he still refuses to come in. Each day, she leaves more gifts, until the front porch is as comfortable as the inside and the cat invites the woman to come out. The simple text is enhanced dramatically by the three-dimensional-looking illustrations, which are wonderfully detailed photographs of a dollhouse and clay characters. The photos are set against parchment-colored backdrops and framed by scroll borders, giving the pages a cozy, old-fashioned look. While the tale will be fun to share, the photographs are a delight to pore over individually. Endpapers complete with claw scratches round out a package that should please everyone from cat lovers to miniature enthusiasts. This is such a sweet story - the actual story is told on the last page of the book but is not part of the main story for children. [1 copy available]

THE FAITHFUL ELEPHANTS: A True Story of Animals, People and War
translated from the Japanese by Tomoko Tsuchiya Dykes. Color illustrations by Ted Lewin. Condition: UNREAD 1991 Trumpet soft cover, first printing. Content: This book has a true message about war - but is a heart-rending, gut-wrenching story for people who love animals and don't watch them eating each other on Animal Planet. A zookeeper narrates the story of how there came to be graves at the zoo: when Tokyo was showered with bombs during the bleak days of World War II, the authorities feared that if the zoo were destroyed, the animals might accidentally be freed and wreak havoc on the city. So they decided that all the zoo animals would be killed. But the elephants wouldn't eat the poisonous food they were offered, and the needles in the syringes containing poison broke before they could penetrate the elephants' rough skin. So the elephants were starved to death, a slow and painful process watched by the zookeepers who loved them. An upsetting story for children or adults, this powerfully conveys the deadly side effects of war. Lewin's watercolors show the massive gray bodies in their state of decline; it is impossible not to appreciate the heartbreak of the animals' plight. But this is a book that provokes questions about the nature of death and dying (children may read into this that some may be killed for the greater good of all), and so should be chosen with care. All ages. [NOTE: The Japanese version of this book states that to show the people of Japan that in this war, people would have to be ready to sacrifice anything for their country. If it was necessary, the lives of animals or even other people would have to be given up for the good of Japan. The US version does not include this tidbit.} Questions welcome. [1 copy only]

THE GIRL WHO LOVED COYOTES: Stories of the Southwest
by Nancy Wood. Beautiful Southwestern color illustrations by Diana Bryer. Condition: NEW 1995 Morrow Junior Books hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ issued), first printing, library binding. Content: As Wood notes in her preface, the coyote is "the embodiment of the great [American] Southwestern spirit, surviving against impossible odds." In many of these 12 original stories, the coyote is a central figure of survival amid the clash of Indian, Spanish, and Anglo cultures. The title story launches the book's exploration of conflict. When a sheepherder's daughter watches a pack of coyotes eat one of her father's sheep, she cries, "Those are my father's sheep!" and a coyote replies, "It's our nature to eat sheep." Sympathetic to the coyotes, the girl flees with the pack and is said to be heard singing with them every new moon. The stories vary greatly, but all are compellingly written, inventive, and tinged with mysticism and melancholy over an environment scarred by warring human interests. The striking, oil-on-linen illustrations also convey a complexity of viewpoint. Both primitive and ornate, traditional and contemporary, the paintings somehow wrestle the southwestern cliches of cactus and howling coyotes into emblems of great dignity. Questions welcome. HACHIKO WAITS
by Leslea Newman. Wonderful B&W illustrations by machiyo Kodaira. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 2004 Henry Holt hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Problem: Light shelf wear to bottom boards with some sort of tag-removal mark bottom loose end page (now covered with a blank bookplate). Tiny indentions front DJ panel. Content: Hachi, an Akita pup, reveres his master and likes nothing more than accompanying Japanese professor Eizaburo Ueno to his morning train and then meeting him in the afternoon. One day the professor dies while at work, yet the faithful Hachi awaits his return at the station every day until his own death some 10 years later. Newman's fictionalized account of this true story adds a young boy, Yasuo, who befriends the dog and the professor and later cares for Hachi during his steadfast vigil at the Shibuya, Japan, train station. Yasuo brings a childhood focus to the poignant story and keeps it from becoming overly depressing, and Kodaira's soft, black-and-white sketches help to break up the chapters for younger readers and add interest to the story. Grades 3 - 5. The story has been Americanized in the 2009 movie Hachi: A Dog's Tale directed by Lasse Hallström and starring Richard Gere, Joan Allen, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Jason Alexander. LITTLE BROTHER MOOSE
by James Kasperson. Beautiful color illustrations by Karlyn Holman. Condition: NEW c. 2000 Dawn soft cover, 6th printing. Content: This simple natural history tale follows a young moose as he wends his way along a river and wanders out of the countryside into a road filled with passing vehicles and then into a town. After a night and day of quiet confusion, he spots geese flying overhead, pointing the way home. By mid-morning, his curiosity waning, he realizes he is lost. By holding steadily to the moose's unique perspective, Kasperson balances the preachy undertone of his tale. Softly illuminated watercolor scenes fill the pages, following the snowy wanderings of the clumsy-looking calf. The artist is adept at shaping material in the picture-book format; well-composed illustrations are inviting and capably convey setting and story. [1 copy available]

MAX IN HOLLYWOOD, BABY
by Maira KALman. Wonderful, zany color illustrations by the Author. Idea stolen by Ivan Kazlinsky from Truman Capote in 1952. Decorated end pages. Condition: NEW 1996 Viking hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first edition, first printing. Content: Ordinarily, a dog's life isn't characterized by glamour, but Max Stravinsky, canine extraordinaire, runs with the in-crowd. Max, last sighted among the poodles and bulldogs of gay Paree in Ooh-la-la (Max in Love) , here continues his postmodern, exceedingly quirky adventures. This time he's in Tinseltown to pen a "sugar-smackin, rootin-tootin, high-spy, sci-fi . . . madcap musical mystery" script, and he gets star treatment--even coasting around in a limo chauffeured by the fabulously suave Ferrrnando stet Extra Debonnaire. Kalman takes artistic risks even beyond those of her earlier titles, freewheelingly experimenting with different styles, sizes and colors of type, and sometimes substituting cleverly manipulated chunks of text for illustrations. However, the romance and wonderment are absent, replaced by all-out hipness; Kalman doesn't attain the high standards she set in Ooh-la-la . Her oddball wit remains--who else would correlate "Film noir, Mel Blanc"--and Max is still cult-hero material, but this book will ultimately amuse adults more than kids. All ages. [1 copy available]

McDUFF MOVES IN (With Free Westie Bookplate)
by Rosemary Wells. Cute color illustrations by Susan Jeffers - who must certainly know one special Westie. Condition: If this book has been read, it was very gently - it has, however, been perused on the shelf - who could resist? This is a 1998 Scholastic soft cover (stapled wraps), second printing. Tiny shelf wear. Content: This is the story of a little Westie who was picked up by the dog pound but was able to escape to feedom into a rain storm. He was hungry and wet and he was rebuffed at every house where he tried to find food and shelter. Finally he found the perfect family. If you havae ever picked up a stray dog from the streets, you will love this book. If you love terriers, Westies in particular, you will love this book. And so will your children. Reviewer: "Our toddler loves McDuff Moves In. I like to think it's because of the stylish, 1920's-era illustrations. The colours and images are unlike those of any other books in our collection. The matt colours are perfect for the wet, night setting. Art Deco textiles, wallpaper and hair styles make it even more interesting. The illustrations are backed up by great text. Frequent animal sounds like "Woof!" and "Hiss!" make it fun to read aloud, and a perceptive two year-old will join in. The dialogue is interesting, and I found myself experimenting with inflection. It's nice to change things a little on the 60th time through! If you are looking for a book with a difference, try McDuff Moves In." Ages 4 - 8. [1 copy available]

ELIZABETH TAYLOR'S NIBBLES & ME
written & illustrated by Elizabeth Taylor. Adorable color illustrations plus B&W photos & movie stills. Remainder. Condition: NEW 2002 Simon & Schuster small hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first thus, first printing. Content: In 1946, Elizabeth Taylor -- then fourteen and a major star at MGM -- published a book about her pet chipmunk, Nibbles. With wit, charm, and remarkable skill, she related the adventures and mishaps of her high-spirited friend. She and Nibbles were virtually inseparable during the shooting of National Velvet and other films; in fact the chipmunk almost got to appear in Courage of Lassie -- but he was so well behaved that he didn't look real, and his scene was cut! Recounted here are such stories as the happiest birthday of her life, when she was given King Charles, the horse who was called The Pi in National Velvet, because only Elizabeth could ride him. Long out of print, this enchanting memoir is available once again with Miss Taylor's original illustrations (including previously unpublished drawings from her private collection), photos of Elizabeth Taylor and Nibbles on and off the set, and a new introduction by the legendary actress. Children will love the story of a girl and her pet; older readers will appreciate the insight into young Elizabeth Taylor's life that this book provides. Ages 9 - 12. [1 copy left.]

OLD POSSUM'S BOOK OF PRACTICAL CATS (For Children)
by T.S. Eliot. Wonderfully clever color illustrations by Axel Scheffler. Decorated end pages with, what else, cats! Condition: NEW 2009 Harcourt hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first American edition, first printing. Content: T. S. Eliot’s playful cat poems have delighted readers and cat lovers around the world ever since they were first published in 1939. They were originally composed for his godchildren, with Eliot posing as Old Possum himself, and later inspired the legendary musical Cats. Now with vibrant illustrations by the award-winning Axel Scheffler, this captivating edition makes a wonderful new home for Mr. Mistoffelees, Growltiger, the Rum Tum Tugger, Macavity the mystery cat, and many other memorable strays. Reviewer: "This is an absolutely charming book. Of course, there are many versions of T.S. Eliot's wonderful collection of poems about cats, but the artist in this version makes this one stand out above the rest. All the images capture the essence of cats in a way that is sure to make any cat lover smile. There is so much detail in the drawings and so much humor, the book would be worth it for the images alone. Coupled with the poetry of T.S. Eliot makes it all the more worth having. A great way to introduce children of any age to a great poet." Even though this book was the basis for the Broadway musical "Cats," it was always intended for children. Great read-aloud book. ONE TINY TURTLE
by Nicola Davies. Colorful illustrations by Jane Chapman. Condition: Gently pre-read, if at all, 2001 Candlewick large hardcover (pictorial boards - no DJ), firist American edition, first printing. No problems. Content: Davies's dramatic rendering of the life cycle of the Loggerhead turtle draws readers into the mysteries of this reclusive deep-sea creature, while Chapman's aqua-tinted full-spread illustrations bring the ocean world to life in all its majestic beauty. Loggerhead swims alone in the vastness of the water, munches on crabs, floats over coral reefs and crawls with slow, heavy steps across the beach to lay her eggs. The text addresses readers directly, while seamlessly weaving facts into the story: "For thirty years you might not find her./ Then one summer night she arrives,/ on the beach where she was born." Additional details deliberately placed outside the story in a smaller font and wavy typeset may confuse youngsters at first, but overall, the informative text flows with poetic grace: "Just beneath the surface/ is a tangle of weed and driftwood/ where tiny creatures cling./ This is the nursery of a sea turtle." Aspiring scientists may also wonder how the newborn turtles find their way from the shore to these "nurseries," but the author gives them much to mull over. By the time Loggerhead's hatchlings race for their lives across the beach, under threat of attack, readers will be emotionally invested in their plight--a sure sign of the accomplished storytelling. THE ORIGINALS: Animals That Time Forgot
by Jane Yolen. Beautiful, detailed color paintings by Ted Lewin. Condition: UNREAD 1999 Philomel hardcover (pictorial boards -no DJ), first impression. Tiny shelf wear. Content: Strong poetry and astonishingly beautiful paintings celebrate animals across the world that have hardly changed through time. There's the gorgeously preening red jungle fowl, the huge Tamworth pig, the wild Exmoor pony, the dark-faced Churro sheep of the Navajo; Biblical animals, some of them still living in the "stone-sown deserts," the meadows, mountains, and moors of their very first homes. Lewin's dramatic paintings almost overwhelm the words at times, but children--on their own and in science and poetry classes--will be fascinated by the stories of evolutionary roots and endurance ("history written strong / in bone and skin / in hoof and horn"). A page of notes at the back extends what the poems say about each animal's origins and descendants. Kindergarten to adults. This is a wonderful book!! Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

POLAR THE TITANIC BEAR: The True Story of the Toy Bear Who Suvived the Titanic
by Daisy Corning Stone Spedden. Wonderful color illustrations by Laurie McGaw. B&W era family photos, also. Condition: UNREAD c. 1998 Madison Press small soft cover, no printing given. Tny edge wear. Content: Imagine the excitement of rooting around in an old attic and discovering the letters, diaries, and photo albums of a relative. What if that memorabilia opened a window on the sinking of the Titanic, the most famous sea disaster of all time? That's exactly what happened to Leighton H. Coleman III. Exploring the attic of his relative Daisy Corning Stone Spedden, he found many personal treasures, including a charming book Daisy had written for her 8-year-old son, Douglas, in 1913. This story, combined with award-winning artist Laurie McGaw's gorgeous watercolor illustrations, actual family photographs, keepsakes, and historic postcards, weaves the fabric of Polar the Titanic Bear, an engaging slice of history for all ages, told through the black glass eyes of an extraordinary toy bear named Polar. The story begins in the toy workshop where Polar is born, and quickly moves to the point where he is given to "Master," Daisy Spedden's son Douglas. Soon the boy and bear are inseparable! As the wealthy Speddens are world travelers, Polar and his new family sail from New York to Algiers and on to the French Riviera, until it comes time for them to return to America on the Titanic. On the fateful night of the sinking, Polar and the Speddens are lucky enough to be lowered down the side of the luxury liner in a lifeboat, but when the family boards the rescue ship, Polar finds himself left behind! How will Polar make it back to his best friend? In the epilogue, rich with family photographs, the historical context for the story is fully and engagingly explained, with more details on the Titanic disaster as well as a smattering of toy history. This is a wonderful gift book--the richness and emotion of the story are all the more poignant when enhanced by the Spedden family photographs, their tragic personal story, and the reflection of an era that will never exist again. SAINT FRANCIS SINGS TO BROTHER SUN: A Celebration of His Kinship With Nature
selected & retold by Karen Pandell. Beautiful, soft color illustrations by Bijou Le Tord. Decorated end pages. Condition: NEW 2005 Candlewick Press large hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), first printing. Light edge wear to DJ edges. Content: From Karen Pandell and Bijou Le Tord comes an ode to Saint Francis's connection with nature that transcends culture and faith — an inspiration for all time and all people. "Sing praises to all Your creatures, And above all to Brother Sun, Who gives us the day as He enlightens us." -From Saint Francis's "The Canticle of Brother Sun" More than eight hundred years ago, a once-privileged young man cast off his worldly possessions to live an austere life amid nature, where his gentleness and compassionate words drew even wild creatures to his feet. The now-legendary Saint Francis of Assisi receives a fitting tribute in this elegant, inviting volume, in which stanzas of the "Canticle of Brother Sun" are interwoven with nature tales about the man who composed this sacred song and followed by an author's note, biography, bibliography, and source notes. Illustrated by Bijou Le Tord in delicate, graceful charcoal drawings highlighted with gold, reflecting both the saint's simplicity and his joyous spirit, this beautiful compilation makes it clear that the songs and stories of Saint Francis are indeed the heritage of every child. The book is beautifully designed. Unifying elements appear throughout, such as a repeated pattern of colored tiles, the verses of The Canticle reproduced in gold superimposed on a medieval-style shield background, and Le Tords gold-embellished, primitive-style paintings. All religions should relate to St. Francis' love of animals and the environment. Questions welcome. [1 copy available]

SEABISCUIT VS. WAR ADMIRAL: The Greatest Horse Race in History
by Kat Shehata. Beautiful color illustrations by Joe McElwee. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 2003 Angel Bea hardcover (pictorial boards) & DJ (in mylar jacket), first ediiton, first printing. Short repaired tear back cover at spine. Otherwise perfect. Content: With a best-selling book and a major motion picture, Seabiscuit has certainly regained celebrity status. This book centers on his rivalry with War Admiral that culminated in a two-horse race to determine the winner. A streamer between the illustration and text on each spread offers a brief description of the event as if it were being broadcast by an announcer. In the paragraphs below it, the author describes Seabiscuit's life from his early, less-than-stellar beginnings as a short-legged, seemingly uncooperative youngster until he was named the 1938 "Horse of the Year." The information is presented in a lively manner and is sufficient for brief reports. The illustrations wonderfully mirror the text using rich colors and eye-catching details such as a portion of a racetrack program and a vignette of the NBC newscaster. The horses are dynamically rendered. Seabiscuit's personality shines through, including his unique sleeping habits. One spread shows him sacked out for the night with his faithful stable mates that included a dog, a spider monkey, and a pony. A glossary of racing terms and brief information about the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Charities are included. Like Seabiscuit, this book is a winner. Gades 2 - 4+. [1copy available]

THERE'S STILL TIME: The Success of the Endangered Species Act
by Mark Galan. Foreword by the great Bruce Babbitt. Wonderful color photos illustrate. Condition: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1998 National Geographic hardcover (pictorial boards -no DJ issued), first printing. The loose end page bears a gift inscription. Otherwise perfect. Content: Several of the success stories of the Endangered Species Act are celebrated in this book illustrated with glorious, full-color photographs. Galan begins with the history of the act, explaining the difference between threatened and endangered and mentioning that originally 109 species were listed. Various animals and plants that have benefited from government protection are featured along with large, crystal-clear photos. The bald eagle, the gray wolf, the snail darter, and the Loch Lomond coyote thistle are among those included. Although the author does not cover in depth the processes used for increasing animal populations and reintroducing certain species into the wild, an overall view of conservation efforts is given. Bruce Babbitt's impassioned foreword brings home the moral and spiritual arguments as opposed to the scientific reasons for saving endangered animals. Grades 3 - 5. [1 copy available]

Content: A long, long time ago when wondrous things could be seen, the earth was a vast and peaceful place and every cat was green. From spring's beginning through winter's end, all cats took special pride in sharing a colour and living nine lives side by side by side. (That was from the book text.) This is such an inventive and unusual book. The cats finally tired of being green and began to paint themselves different colors - bright purples, blues, and oranges. White cats were imprisoned. Young children will love this book for the rhyming text and bright pictures. Perfect for read-aloud. [2 copies available]
